Goals
- Promote the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices among the Farmer Union of Agricultural Groups of Soumbalako (UGAS) to enhance food security and inclusive nutrition, while preserving the environment and ensuring long-term economic and social well-being.
- Improve the income of potato and horticulture producers within UGAS while maintaining sustainable production practices.
What We Do
The project focuses on strengthening UGAS through three key actions:
- Provide members with adequate services through a professionalized technical team.
- Promote agroecological practices and appropriate technologies for better crop production.
- Establish at least two inclusive clusters in the potato and horticulture sectors to improve access to markets and inputs while supporting the agroecological transition.
Target Groups & Beneficiaries
- The Farmer Union of Agricultural Groups of Soumbalako (UGAS), including its elected members, technical staff, and affiliated producers.
- Direct Beneficiaries:
- 4,000 UGAS members from 86 agricultural groups, involved in potato, rice, maize, and vegetable farming
- 2,000 potato producers from 52 groups
- 250 young entrepreneurs from UGAS
Project Updates
- Key achievements include among others:
- Training of managers: 150 managers (including 54 women) from 30 groups were trained in the use of management tools (cash register, meeting register, monitoring of sales and production) to improve transparency and governance.
- Distribution of 10.8 tons of potato seeds (Spunta) to 13 seed multipliers (including 3 women) engaged in a reimbursement in kind system (23 tons expected).
- Training of 23 model farmers (including 13 multipliers) on good agro-ecological practices (rotation, compost, ploughing, corrective organic fertilization, use of biopesticides).
- Support to 14 groups (472 members, including 299 women) spread over 9 cluster areas part of the main UGAS cluster.
