Management of Water of Collection, Mali, 2005-2008
Donors: African Development Bank via ICRISAT/CORAF, IER
Goal
The specific objectives of the project were to refine and popularize water harvesting techniques:
- To support the adoption of farming systems which optimize the interaction between water and nutrients through a participatory extension approach
- To strengthen the capacity of research organizations, NGOs, extension services and the private sector to support agricultural intensification
- To ensure the sustainability of the innovations being introduced by the project.
What We Do
- Selecting project sites, setting up demonstrations, training producers, organizing field days, developing training materials and arranging for follow-up, evaluation and project reports
- Printing booklets and data sheets for disseminating information towards a broad public.
Accomplishments
- The results of the 2005/2006 crop season showed that the two introduced technologies outperform traditional farming practices in terms of grain production and dry matter yield
- Experience-sharing visits and organized discussions enabled several household heads in the target communes to access information and directly engage with the trials.
- Radio broadcasts and video recordings were produced to disseminate information at the national level
- The millet/bean association was particularly well received, with 80% of visitors expressing a preference for it over the other two technologies.
