Pilot Hybrid Maize Production Project, Mali, 2005
Donors: USAID / PRODEPAM
Goal
- To enhance the efficiency and reliability of the supply chain for animal feed mills in Mali
- To ensure a steady and high-quality supply of maize to COPROMA (Co-operative of Animal Feed Manufacturers of Mali)
- To support local farmers by improving access to quality seeds, fertilizers, and training, ultimately increasing maize production and profitability.
What We Do
- Selected 90 producers who farmed a total of 103 hectares, resulting in the production of 400 metric tons of maize
- Facilitated access to seeds and fertilizers
- Translated draft agreements into the local (Bamankan) language and discussed them in group meetings.
Accomplishments
- Widespread adoption of hybrid maize varieties due to their superior quality, high germination rate, drought resistance, and high yield
- Significant increase in seed usage: 600 kg in 2005, 5,000 kg in 2006, 20,000 kg ordered for the 2007/2008 crop season
- Farmers in different regions formed associations for easier access to seed.
